Well, I survived. The last couple of years have been particularly tough for me, for various reasons. As a result I made some important life decisions, and should now have more time and energy to devote to the things that are important to me, including screenwriting.
Which is great, but at the same time, there’s little doubt that the film and TV industry is in crisis. The evidence is there in multiple news reports and grim anecdotal evidence from people who are working (or, generally, struggling to find work) in the UK and the US.
Like a stubborn little donkey I’m going to plod on, in hope rather than expectation, because although I would love to get more of my work produced, there’s no point in having that as the marker of success. It’s simply not something that’s within our control. There are so many other elements that need to fall into place at just the right time that the making of any show or film becomes a minor miracle. There are many, many writers out there who will never have any of their scripts produced, and that’s not a reflection on their talent or their work ethic, it’s simply that the stars did not align.
I firmly believe that we all need ways to express our creativity to be able to live fulfilling lives. Writing stories intended for the screen, even if they never get there, is one of mine.
Happy New Year!
